By 2010, plans for a new facility behind the Matrix were in the works, but as is the case with most new construction, completion on the new building was taking longer than planned. In the meantime, CrossFit Huntsville moved to a second warehouse on Leeman Ferry. This warehouse was definitely a step up, and although still a little rustic, it offered a big, open space with plenty of room and now two bathrooms. In early 2010, CFHSV hosted Sectionals, the first step in qualifying for the CrossFit Games at Brahm Springs park. CFHSV athletes competed alongside athletes from surrounding areas, and an unknown named Rich Froning made his competitive debut. In late May, CFHSV sent two individuals and a team of six athletes to the Dirty South Regional, with one individual moving onto The 2010 CrossFit Games. In late 2010, our new facility was finally completed, and CrossFit Huntsville moved into its first home that was designed and built specifically for CrossFit. Our new facility was top notch, with full locker rooms and showers, a lobby and full kitchen, and a big, open space to thrown down. 2011 marked the first year of the CF Games Open, and CFHSV represented. Later that spring, CFHSV sent four individuals and a team of six athletes to the 2011 Southeast Regional Competition in Jacksonville, Florida. In late 2011, the space behind the building was turned into a running track, and CrossFit Huntsville athletes continued to show up and show out, day after day, on their quest for elite fitness.

      That was at Regionals! Same competition I did a 1RM Clean & Jerk in socks….😂

      So much has changed with the growth of CrossFit including the simplest of things – fashion.

      We all started barefooted on the green floor with basketball and soccer shorts. Once we started wearing shoes it was running shoes, basketball shoes, and good ol sneakers of all sorts.

      The change and growth was evident just from ‘10 to ‘11 Regionals. It’s seen in these pics. In ‘10 you couldn’t tell a team from an individual athlete as everyone threw down in their ‘gym clothes’. In the next pic you can see that we have team shirts representing our hometown Boxes.

      The open air events in a huge field venue including the basketball courts of ‘10 with no limits or restrictions to fan and crowd interaction changed to an indoor event with vendors and a controlled environment with stands for the fans in ‘11.

      Massive growth and changes have taken place year to year that make it seem like CrossFit has been around longer than it has.

    I joined CFHSV in late June 2010. For years I did some weight training to supplement the big running miles, but was in a weightlifting rut, and needed something new. A friend sent me an article by some dude named Russell Berger at CFHSV, so a week later I walked into the second warehouse down the street on Leeman-Ferry for my 101 with Jake Naumcheff. I just coming off a successful 50-Mile trail run in the southern Colorado mountains, and so I “thought” I was in darn good shape. Jake’s little 5min WOD crushed me: 5 burpees, 5 box-jump, 5 pull-ups AMRAP. Totally wrecked me…I was hooked.

    I faithfully came in for strength work 2-3 days a week for the next year, to include the move to our first dedicated facility. Summer 2011 all that training paid off at the Western States 100 in California. Since then I have mostly retired from ultrarunning, but have continued with CFHSV 3-5 days a week, mostly the early morning classes, especially Clair’s awesome yoga classes, and occasionally some BBOLC. I have gotten to visit boxes around the country and several foreign countries during my travels, and can say unequivocally that CFHSV is among the finest boxes you will ever see: facilities, coaching, and culture.

    Have had to take a hiatus twice during the last 8 years: once during th federal government furloughs and shutdown (needed to shed my expenses and focus on kid expenses), and for seven months after major shoulder surgery. Was welcomed back with open arms by Dennis, Mandee, Nathaniel, and crew. Have always been thankful for that.

    Look forward to throwing down with all of you this weekend, both weight and adult beverages!

    In 2010 I was still eating ice cream. I could drive by a Dairy Queen and my car would autopilot right up to the drive through window. But in 2011 my son asked me to do a diet with him. He had just finished his senior year of basketball at Bob Jones and was going to start lifting weights. So I agreed and lost about 40 pounds. My exercise consisted of walking a mile and maybe some dumbbell curls. I was really happy with my fitness at this point in my life.

    In 2010, I moved from kickboxing actual bags to cardio kickboxing air, spin class, and zumba (hence my sweet, sweet dance moves). I hired a personal trainer who made me move his giant whale of a car (not Caddy N8) around the parking lot and do leg presses. Carson and Brady seemed to be yelling about some workout every time we went to eat Moe’s wings. After pt on my back for sciatica, I thought I was ready for CF in 2011. After the first workout with some kiteboarder TX dude in my 101 named Mac, I promptly threw up. I was determined not to give up just because it was uncomfortable. Then I met Dennis…there was no way I was going to give up because he yelled louder than I did. I can’t say enough about how much CF improved my health, mentally and physically. Plus I’ve met some amazing people I’m proud to call true friends along the way. Happy anniversary CFHSV!

    Big changes moving from the second warehouse to the taj mahal behind the matrix. CrossFit got semi organized with sectionals and regionals in 2010 then the open in 2011. I think Russell went to the games in 2009 and finished one spot out of qualifying in 2010 and 2011? Lots of fun being on the regionals teams in 2010 and 2011.
