Why Legalizing Marijuana Makes Sense- TIME

I thought California already had limited decriminalized MJ laws, or is it Nevada? Something like less possession of less than 1 oz for personal use being okay.

Anyway, after 15 yrs of working in emergency rooms I’ve yet to have a pot head come in requesting detox, rehab, or having a significant abuse issue related solely to MJ. I’m talking only MJ use.
Now, drunks, meth, opiates, benzo’s, cocaine, X, ketamine, mouthwash, inhalants, dextromethorphan (cough syrup) and polysubstance abusers show up non-stop in a continuous never ending stream. Most of them for the ump-teenth time. Many, if not most, of them also abuse MJ.
But, when I recall patients only using MJ… nope. Seen a fair share of kids whose parents have found a joint and panic. But, I’ll ignore these. I’m sure there are folks with serious abuse issues related to MJ, but they are not spending your tax and health insurance dollars visiting the ER.

I’m all for legalization of the ganja weed. I have numerous friends that use and you would be surprised. These are well put together “family guys” with professional degrees and good jobs. My personal thoughts are this. If you drink beer, wine for a recreational drug then you have no basis to claim that weed is “bad”. The effects are quite similar for both and you should not do certain things under the influence of both. Common sense.

yes. It should be decriminalized, taxed, and used for medicinal purposes ASAP.

The debate on decriminalization also wreaks of racist profiling. There is a lot of objection to legalization b/c weed is often used to arrest folks to start looking for other outstanding warrents, etc…..but that is a whole nother ball of wax.

    I don’t smoke it….but Legalize it already!

maybe it would help my clean? did the 1 x7 Power hang clean and Jerk today……….need major practice on teaching my brain and body to cooperate on the clean
105,125,125,140(PR),155(x),155(x),150(x). Just don’t feel comfortable getting under the weight, really pisses me off. Practice, practice, practice

  4. Slade White says:

The reason you never see MJ user in the E.R. is because you have to really be motivated to go to the E.R…….and that just isn’t gonna happen. You’ll find the MJ users at the local Sonic getting a butterfinger blast.

135,145,145,145,155,155,165. Some of these were pretty ugly. I have somehow made a huge knot on my thigh from rubbing the bar from my power position. So now I have a new workout buddy. I think I’ll name it Hans.

  5. Clint says:

I think I have developed a need! In the state of California you are allowed a certain number of ounces on your person. I believe it is a maximum of 3, it was recently on the Television. However, this is completely against Federal law.

On a less narcotic topic, I did the 5 rounds of OHS, and 400 M Row. 30:11 (rx). Spine felt like I was going to snap in half but the movement felt really fluid the first couple rounds.

  6. James Lambert says:

Wishing I had done the run and OHS WOD, lol

  7. robbdempsey says:

kind of hard to believe marihuana was legal when alcohol wasn’t. Put some big special interest groups behind alcohol and here we are today. I researched Anslinger and the tax act of 1937 in school and more or less the taxation bill is ready to go, it’s just a recategorization of marihuana on the controlled substance list.

Jerk is miserable, hang clean isn’t so bad. mostly worked on form since I almost when through the window on the second 165.

    165(x), 155, 165(x), 135×3, 145(x), 135×3, 135×3

    Hang Power Clean and Jerk

    Butterfinger blast… is that Paleo?

I’d also like to see MJ legalized. Don taught me this lesson.

Let me tell you about Don. He was a great American.

Don volunteered for the Army at 16 lying about his age, like so many others of his generation. He served as an enlisted infantry soldier and was wounded in WWII, he became an armor officer and was again wounded during the Korean war, he spent time in Vietnam (managed not to get shot that time) and after 30+ yrs of active service retired as a Colonel. Don was “the man”. Quiet dignity, firm but fair, he had a presence, men like Don are few and far between. While I was still on active duty I had the privilege to call Don and his wife my patients and friends.

Don developed pancreatic cancer, it spread to his bones. The pain was intense. He tearfully confided to me that he secretly wished to die, he hurt that badly. He did his best to hide this from his wife, but…she knew.

Don could not tolerate opiates (pain killers) from his first Morphine injection back in the 1940s he would vomit, violently. We tried everything, they all made him puke. Anti-emetic medications did little to nothing for the opiate induced nausea. Don had the choice: vomit to the point of dry heaves lasting hours or intense, scream at the top of your lungs pain.

Don’s wife got her hands on some MJ, she didn’t bother to tell him how. It was the only anti-emetic that worked (not perfectly) but enough to turn his puking up toenails into a vague sense of nausea.

Don is long dead, but I still sometimes think about his wife. A sweet aging Southern Belle driving around in the sh_tty side of Columbia, SC having to deal with the bottom rung of our society just to score a bag of weed for her dying husband. A disgrace and dishonor for a man that gave so much for his country.

Haven’t thought about Don in awhile. Thanks Russell.

  9. Katie says:

Oh good ole MJ. Frankly it doesn’t effect me if its legalized or not, save that yearly indulgence that inevitably happens around my birthday. What really amuses me is that the ‘politicians’ that lobby so hard against its legalization are the same hypocrites who have their DD on speed dial.

I came in early and did the OHS workout I missed this weekend. In the rain.
    22:07 – 55# – rowed the last 400M cuz’ it started pouring, and 43*.

  10. Robert Montgomery says:

Hang Power Clean and Jerk: 135,155,175 on all 5 other sets which is a PR for me on the hang power clean.

Had a guy with a marijuana leaf sticker on the back of his car try to run me over as I biked to work this morning. Freakin pot head! It was probably one of Kevins “family guy” friends with a professional degree and good job. 🙂

  11. Zak says:

I was on my way to work this morning. Minding my own business, smoking my joint, when all of a sudden, some guy jumps out in front of me on a bike. I almost hit him!

  12. Robert Montgomery says:

I knew it was one of you guys!

  13. Zak says:

beyondthewhiteboard.com did a site upgrade last week. For those of you that may want to keep an online log, it’s a great tool. It’s free up until July and then $3 per month after that. It’s worth a look.

  14. Russell says:

or you could be a man and just write in a notebook

  15. Zak says:

I’ve kept a notebook since day 1. Wait, WTF? You have a profile at that site Russell.

  16. Will Blankenship says:

    First time doing this…

    135, 165, 175, 185, 195 (X), 135, 135. – PR 185

Failed the 195 attempt. Mental block. Did several more sets at 135 trying to work on technique.

  17. klowe says:

Comment #11 wins the comedy award!

    Well played sir……well played

  18. Tricer says:

Weed. Wow…. just imagine the outcry from the drug dealers. They’d be out of work. I mean, seriously … not much market in moonshine, or homebrew even though the liquor stores are raking in a fortune in taxes.

Screw it though, I can’t even get a good beer in this state (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/664/73/?ba=bros)…. so all the arguing over legalizing pot is kinda silly to me.

    400 meter run
    95 pound Overhead squat, 15 reps 16:30 as Rx.d

  19. Will Blankenship says:

Double Chocolate Stout… doesn’t get any more hardcore than that.

    Trice… GTFO

  20. Slade White says:

“Whats wrong wit da beer we got? It drank pretty good, don’t it?”

  21. Daniel says:

Great comments today on an apparently touchy subject! Kudos to Katie as the only one who admits smoking. Unless of course Zak was serious. I’m high as I type this so frankly it’s all quite amusing to me. ROTFLMAO.

Seriously though. Today is the grand opening of Crossfit for Women!

Welcome to the family all the new Crossfiters! We are honored to have you. I hope you post. Our online community building effort has been a great success. So we hope you join us in our obviously broad subject matter discussions, and we wish you great success in meeting your fitness goals.

  22. Daniel says:

#75 OHS 400m, 5 rounds with Clint. I suck it up at OHS. Getting better though. Took me all of 39 minutes. Damn slow, but I needed it.

  23. Karen says:

    400meter run
    OHS @ 65lbs
    5 rounds

    Running sucks!
    But I did beat Clint…again!

  24. Russell says:

of course I do. I wouldn’t talk shit about a website’s usefulness until I’ve tried it. I’m not convinced though. Paper and pen is best.

  25. Brad says:

hanging power clean and jerk seven sets of one. 135-185-205(pr)-225(x)-215(x)-205-205. 215 was just a mental problem with me. I got the clean and didnt get the jerk.

  26. Jimmy says:

hanging power clean and jerk 185-205-225-245(F)-230-235-245(F) had bad form on the power clean so i couldn’t get the heavier weight

  27. J.D. says:

Really cool post today. I seem to agree with most folks here. I don’t smoke it, but have tried it in college. Unimpressed. I agree that it is probably one the safer drugs out there, except it does smell bad, and I don’t really have a problem with legalization. But I DO think that Patchouli should be illegal!!! I swear that crap smells MUCH worse than dope! You have to burn a blunt just to get rid of the nausea from that smell. Who do the stoners think they’re fooling? BATHE ALREADY!

  28. Garth says:

The problem with MJ, ganja, whatever fun title you want to use is demand. Klein’s best point is how many users we are putting away. We need to reduce demand. Decriminilzation of pot would go a long way toward that. Treat people who abuse pot, coke, alcohol, or paint thinner rather than immediately put them in the clink. California has had some good success with this. Less demand and less users in jail means less gangs, safer streets, and more sales for Frito-Lay.

For those logging online, I suggest http://www.logwod.com. It is free — and will stay that way. My buddy runs it. You can ‘friend’ anyone else on there and it puts your times/scores against theirs in a sort of social network. They can be at CFH or anywhere else. I log all my WODs there. They have a gym side, which quickly shows all the people. It also quickly shows you your previous times/scores for that WOD’s previous workouts without sorting through old blog posts. I feel it is vastly superior to a pen and paper/notebook.

  29. Larry Lowe says:

I did today’s wod substituting pushups for pullups in my hotel room looking over Waikiki Beach (that’s right)!

100ft lunge (room was six yards wide – lots of turning)
    21 pushups
    21 situps
    100, 18, 18, 100, 15, 15, 100, 12, 12, 100, 9, 9 , 100, 6, 6

  30. Katherine Berger says:

    250 meter row
    10 Handstand pushups
as many rounds as possible in 15 minutes

    5 rounds completed

  31. Clint says:

Argggg Lord Jesus Mother of Marry! She beat me bad. No excuse she is surely strong, good job.

  32. Clint says:

Larry take yourself down to CrossfitOahu. It is maybe 4 miles from the Northern side of Waikiki Beach. Here is the location.

    556 Reed Lane
    Honolulu, Hawaii 96813

  33. Larry Lowe says:

I am going to try to make it there later today.

  34. Jeremy Nuckols says:

    400M Run plus OHS
Took me 35 minutes plus some seconds with reduced weight for the OHS (75#). Caused a pinched nerve in my right arm. Still feels funny in the thumb. Boo!
