Army Captain Dan Whitten, 28, of Grimes, Iowa, assigned to the 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, based out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, died February 2, 2010, when enemy forces in Zabul, Afghanistan, attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device. Whitten is survived by his wife, Starr Whitten, his mother, Jill Whitten, his father, Dan Whitten, and his sister, U.S. Army Captain Sarah Whitten.

    An appropriate athlete to be representing CFHSV on Flag Day and the Army’s Birthday! Eugene is not only an awesome athlete and a stand up guy, but he’s a great American with years of service to his country. This dude is great and has been since he first dropped in for the Open many years ago. Since then, we’ve gotten to know him and his beautiful family, and we are thrilled they are back in Huntsville and throwing down with us again! Eugene is a well-rounded athlete who can squat for days and string muscle-ups together with ease. He always sets the bar high and never gives less than his full effort on any WOD. Keep leading the way, Eugene! 😊

    Mean ‘Gene dropping the hammer! Eugene is one of the good guys. He’s been at CFHSV off and on for years through his travels and we were most excited to have Eugene, Evelyn, and their little Leo back at CFHSV. Eugene is a high skilled athlete who’s sneaky strong too. He’s a well rounded guy and athlete that’s always been kind and fun to be be around. He’s got a dry wit that’s never sarcastic and always on time. Pound for pound he might be the best squatting machine in the gym. ‘Gene ain’t mean at all and it’s great having him Evy and Leo back at the gym.

    Love being at CFHSV and thankful to be welcome for so many years. Appreciate all that the coaches do every day for all of the athletes. Killer WODs each day with great athletes.

    Eugene! This guy can do it all! Super laid back, coachable and just an awesome guy. He always gets his WOD checked off in the mornings and always puts up impressive scores. Great family and I can’t wait to get their little guy down at CrossFit Kids! Love all the families we have at CFHSV… especially this one!
