In 2009, CrossFit Huntsville outgrew the green floor of the Matrix Gym and moved to our first warehouse on Johnson Road. To say this place was “unfinished” would be an understatement. It was big, it was dirty, and it was somehow still pretty awesome. With one toilet for all to share, and the drywall crumbling off the walls around us, our CFHSV crew kept on keeping on, continuing on our quest to get stronger, faster and fitter every day.

This is where we started!!! Just after the new year, 2010. We came to “observe” and signed up on the spot. Russell drives a hard bargain!

    • Carson says:

Our first WOD (non-fundamentals) was heavy deadlifts. My PR that day was 165#. It’s been a crazy, fantastic journey!

  2. Brady says:

I remember this place – an hour long 101 class with Jake, and a messed up wod of rowing, air squats, and box jumps. That wod was only 5min but kicked my ass! I was so uncertain at what Carson had got me into.

And our first class was deadlifts – I remember a PR of 275# . Which coincidentally I is now 2 pounds under my new clean and jerk.

    Damn I enjoy this place!!

  3. Butch Deadlift says:

Will we be allowed to wear shoes in the new box, brah?

  4. Trent says:

So cool to see the roots, thanks CFHSV for giving us all that you do!

As I spend the week looking so forward to our new gym and all of the incredible new memories we will make, I am also looking back on my time at CFHSV remembering the all the firsts, all the laughs, all the growth.
My favorite thing about our gym is the people in it. So as I look back, I can’t help but remember my very first friends here, who are now some of my closest; Coach Dennis Berry, Jamie Flynt, Kerri Wellendorf and Tracy Roberts. I can remember our first conversations, and how much it meant to have you introduce yourself, want to be my partner, and genuinely get to know me. I felt so clueless and intimidated at first, and you all made me feel welcome, and gave me courage with just your friendliness. I won’t ever forget it!
As we embark on our new facility I am renewing my commitment to meet all of the new faces at CFHSV because that’s the most important part! There are so many new athletes lately; both new 101 grads and lots of drop ins! It’s so important for us to remember to smile and talk to everyone we don’t recognize, because an amazing friendship might be on the other side of that greeting 🙂

Looking forward to all of the new memories we will make in our new address!!

    • Tracy says:

      Love you

    • Emily Newman says:

That was beautifully stated Dani! I need to remember to reach out to new people more! As nerve racking as it is for me; it must be more so for them! Thanks for the reminder

    • jamie cherrypicker says:

There is nothing easier than a smile and a handshake. Thank you Dani for being you and for reminding me to shake those hands!

Will bring in my old V-Day Games t-shirt in memory of our past facilities! “Love Hurts”

  7. Don says:

Man, I remember it well. Doing WODs in bare feet, including running down to the fence and back.

  8. CoachDB says:

Dani and all CFHSV Athletes, it was and is our pleasure to meet and greet you and get to coach and train you. Trust me as coaches for such an awesome group of great athletes, friends, really family it is an honor and humbling in every meaning of the word. I love these old pics and the memories they bring up in mind and past deeds. These pics bring back so many memories and even more eagerness for CFHSV’s next step and journey onward to be Stronger than Yesterday. Let’s just keep finishing STRONG as a cohesive CFHSV unit, so we can overcome all of life’s challenges inside and outside of the box!

Warehouse #1 was a blast in a sadistic way! Drywall falling in your face on wallball shots, borken toys and chalk in the corner as a kids-corner, running to the mulch pile at the end of the building for a 400m route. I remember one wod where we had to walk on our hands. I went into a handstand and my finger started bleeding where it hit a sawed off floor screw from previous machinery. I remember Jake Naumchef’s first wod with us at 0600. I remember when Stephen Hand came in for the first time and killed Diane. I remember the morning that Murph flew out of Russell’s car on the way to work – Murph now lives with Kevin and is doing well. This is where Tony Z came up with the idea for 2Pood clothing. Its amazing that CFHSV saw good growth in such a crazy dilapidated gym. I guess it fit the Ethos of the time. Great memories!

Double unders failed me this morning. Couldn’t jump after the lunges yesterday, ha!

Bare feet, oily floors, dirt, chalk and plaster everywhere, The Lowe Brothers (both of them) and crazy Russell Berger….. For the longest time I thought a hot, dirty gym was part of the Crossfit gig. Great friends, great memories and so much to be thankful for. Jordan got me in to this and both of our lives have never been the same since. CFHSV is the real deal people. Appreciate it. There is nothing like it anywhere.
